Jellyfin is a free, open-source media system run by volunteers, and a great one. Moovo is also free and self-hosted, but narrower on purpose: it's about getting your people into the same movie at the same moment.

Two different ideas of sharing
Jellyfin streams from your server to each viewer, converting video when a device or connection needs it. That's ideal on a home network and for watching on a TV. For friends in other cities, it means your upload speed and your server's processor decide how smooth the night is.
Moovo has everyone download their own copy first. Downloads resume after interruptions, then the movie plays offline at full quality. When you watch together, only play, pause and seek travel over the internet, so nothing buffers even on a weak connection.
Watching together
Jellyfin's SyncPlay lets people on the same server join a group and keeps playback in step, and it's a solid feature. Moovo builds the whole app around the shared night: a lobby that waits until everyone's copy is ready, chat and reactions over the movie, a soundboard, secret ratings that flip at the credits, and circles with clocks for people in different time zones.
Setup
Both run in Docker on a NAS, a spare PC or a Mac mini. Moovo's server doesn't transcode, so it runs happily on modest hardware, and it mounts your folders read-only. The first run prints a one-time setup code; you paste it into the app and send invites.
Jellyfin is the better pick if
- You want fully open-source software.
- You watch mostly at home, on a TV, and want apps for it today.
- You also want music, live TV and DVR, books or photos.
- You want to stream in a browser without installing anything.
Moovo is the better pick if
- Watching together with people far away is the main event.
- Someone's connection is slow, and streaming keeps buffering.
- You want the social extras: circles, chat, reactions and ratings.
- You'd like a server that doesn't need a powerful machine.
