Moovo and Plex, side by side
Both let you share the movies and shows you already own with people you invite. Plex is a big, all-round media platform. Moovo is smaller and made for one thing: movie night with the people you love, wherever they are.

Downloads instead of streaming
Plex is built around streaming: your server sends video to each viewer as they watch, and converts it on the fly when a device or connection needs that. It's flexible, and it means the server's upload speed and processor matter every minute of every movie.
Moovo works the other way round. Your people download what they want to watch, resumably, whenever it suits them. Once a movie is on their computer it plays at full quality with no internet at all, so a slow connection on either end only means a download takes longer, never that the movie buffers.
Watching together
In February 2025 Plex said its Watch Together feature would not be part of the new Plex experience on most devices, while staying in the web app for now. Moovo is built around watching together: everyone plays their own copy and only play, pause and seek travel between you, so you stay on the same frame even across an ocean.
Around the movie there's chat, reactions over the picture, a soundboard everyone hears at the same moment, secret ratings that flip at the credits and small games.
Remote access and cost
Since April 29, 2025, streaming personal video from a Plex server outside your home network needs either a Plex Pass on the server owner's account or a Remote Watch Pass for the viewer. Moovo has no such limit: every feature is free, for as many people as your server can serve. An optional Supporter plan pays for development and adds a few cosmetic extras.
Plex is the better pick if
- You want apps on your TV and phone today.
- You also want music, photos or live TV in the same place.
- Your people would rather stream than wait for a download.
- You rely on the wider Plex ecosystem of add-ons and tools.
Moovo is the better pick if
- Your friends or family live far away and you want to press play together.
- Connections are slow or unreliable on one end, and buffering ruins the night.
- You want to share your library with no per-person fees and no ads.
- A Windows computer is fine for now (Mac is coming soon).
